Help for disabled veteran:

November 10, 2009

Three weeks age American Veterans Post 333 was contacted by the Veterans Administration Counseling and Readjustment Center in Hyannis. A disabled Veteran from Mashpee who served in the Gulf War was in need of assistance. This woman had lost her husband also a veteran and was a single mother. She was diagnosed with cancer, lost her jobs and almost lost her house. After long and painful treatments the cancer is in remission. The roof on her house had leaked and collapsed the kitchen ceiling. With limited funds and no job this was impossible to repair by herself. Amvets Post 333 was asked by the V.A. to help this disabled Veteran, as we have helped numerous Veterans prior to receiving this call. Members of the post visited the home and realized a new roof was needed not a patch. At this point the home was unlivable because all the heat left the house through the collapsed ceiling and rain poured in. Amvets Post 333 members covered the roof with a tarp. An emergency repair was needed and with limited post funds Amvets Post 333 went to work on procuring the needed donations. The Post contacted some of our supporters. Gus Healy, from Healy Brothers Construction donated his crew and materials less the singles, Mid Cape Home Centers donated the shingles, and Nauset Disposal supplied the container. In addition generous donations were made from Cape Cod Sons Of Erin, Harry Donovan (Villa Roma), Don Costa, Mark Barry of Sand Dollar and others. On Friday November 6th Gus Healy and crew said they had one day open, Monday November 9th to do the Roof, Post members worked the phones and thanks to Rich Grout, Mid-Cape Home Centers and Jenn Bayuk of Nauset Disposal the new roof is on. Scotty Martin and Leeside Plastering will repair the kitchen ceiling, John Quilter of Allwood Flooring will redo the wood floors and Amvets resident Jack “of all Trades” Griffith will do the rest. Commander John Connell Jr. USNR, Post Commander who had just returned from active duty in Singapore commented “it’s like the A Team, I love when a plan comes together”. In addition Amvets Post 333 has requested a grant to assist the family from the Amvets Department Service Foundation through PDC Leon Proctor a strong supporter of our post and all veterans’. Amvets Post 333 Trustee Richard Sayers commented on Monday“ I can’t think of a better cause to fulfill on Veterans Day, than what the Post and supporters did here today”. The Veteran is attending Nursing School at the 4 C’s now hoping soon to give back to those in need. Fundraising ride honors Xiarhos, others casualties
DENNIS — Yarmouth police Lt. Steven Xiarhos has long been a cheerleader for the U.S. military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That he organized yesterday's Ride for the Fallen, a 30-mile bike ride from Dennis to Wellfleet to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, was no surprise to anyone.
But everything changed Thursday, when a U.S. Marine Corps van showed up at the Yarmouth Police Department. The Marines were looking for the police department's help in notifying a family about the death of a local comrade.
That Marine turned out to be Nicholas Xiarhos, Lt. Xiarhos' 21-year-old son.
Yesterday's ride went on without the well-known police lieutenant. Instead, Xiarhos made the grim journey to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware with his wife, Lisa, and their three other children to witness the return of Nicholas' body from Afghanistan, where he died Thursday of combat wounds.
Before Thursday, only 10 Yarmouth police officers and a few stragglers were planning on participating in the ride, which benefits soldiers wounded in action, said Yarmouth officer Erica Wenberg.
Following news of Nicholas' death — which spread quickly through the community of fire and police brethren — the number of riders grew to about 75.

A scholarship fund in Nicholas George Xiarhos' name has been created. Donations can be made out to Nicholas Xiarhos Fund  and mailed to Amvets Post 333 PO Box 332, Dennis Port Ma. 02639

Hi Comrades,

I want to first take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday and Happy New Year.  As we count down 2009 and prepare for 2010, I wish the best of luck and happiness to you and your families in the coming year.

This past year has been a great year for the Cape Cod Amvets Post 333 and I have especially enjoyed the privilege of being your commander. I hope the New Year brings new opportunities for our post and I’m sure we will be well prepared.

During the holiday season please take a moment of time to reflect what the Post has done and consider what you would like to do next year. I’m always open to new ideas how we can help veterans and their families and I look forward to your input.

Lastly, please keep in mind and in your prayers the young men and women whom are serving today for our great country, without their sacrifices we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the holiday season.

God Bless America

Regards,

CDR John Connell, CDR USN
