A marker for a special union soldier has recently been identified and cleaned up in the Dennis Swan Lake cemetery.
Pvt. Moses A. Handy of Company A. 58th Massachusetts sadly died in Andersonville Prison camp in Georgia on Oct. 1, 1864 at the age of 38 years.
Moses Handy volunteered for his militia on Dec. 17, 1863, leaving his wife Eliza and 5 young children to serve his country. He was however captured by confederate forces at North Arna River, Va on May 27 and died of disease 4 months later.
The stone for Moses and wife Eliza is show below, and being cleaned by scout Sean Mahoney.

Allen Bangs, Lt. Israel Nickerson and Jeraimiah Baker served together and responded to the alarm at Dartmouth and Falmouth in September 1778 of enemy invasion. All returned home safely.Captain Josiah Baker honorably served his country in the War of 1812.

Joseph Leonard served in the US Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945. He received the Purple Heart for his participation in the battle of Iwo Jima. Joe was a very humble and soft-spoken decorated hero who died in 2006 and was buried in Orleans cemetery, with full military honors from fellow Marines.

William Hennessey passed away April 29,2009 at the Cape Cod Hospital,and buried in Bourne. He was in both the Marine Corps Reserves and in the Navy from 1954-1958, during which time he served aboard the USS Newport News. Bill was distinguished by his able leadership as Commander of the Cape and Islands Korean War Veterans Chapter 1 and President of the Mass. chapter of the U.S.Navy Cruisers Sailors Association.

World War I Wounded Warrior
Lester M. Gilbert (1895-1942) received a machine gun bullet inside his helmet while serving with the 26th division at St. Mihiel. He survived after long surgery and rehab, and dedicated his life to veterans' programs,despite his pain and suffering and served as an active member of Harwich American Legion Post, where he was historian and remembered for his bravery and dedication to Dennis and his country.

Young Viet Nam Marine honored by Dennis
PFC Joseph (Dell) Merrill, US Marine was killed in Quang Nam Province on December 1,1968, exactly one year after his 20th birthday. A park in West Dennis was created in his name and serves as the location for AMVET Post 333 annual Veteran's Day ceremonies. Photo below includes Chaplain Harry Watling providing benediction.
Mashpee Marine Dies in Iraq
On August 14, 2008, Pfc. Daniel McGuire was killed by enemy fire in Anbar province while serving withthe 6th Marine Regiment. A recent graduate of Mashpee High School, McGuire had been an Eagle Scout and involved in collecting and making boxes for retired American flags, a project which has been continued by local scouts and AMVET members (See "latest news" page for details of project and ceremony.)
Amvet post member and Yarmouth Marine loses life volunteering for combat in Afganistan.
Young Cpl Nicholas Xiaros, 21, of Yarmouthport lost his life serving his family, friends and country in battle in Afganistan on July 23, 2009. The whole community joins his family in sharing their grief and indebtedness for his service.
